Seven arrests at Chesterfield v Shrewsbury match

Seven people were arrested and one man was taken to hospital with head injuries during trouble at Shrewsbury Town’s match at Chesterfield, police said today.

Police said problems started just after the start of the second half at the B2Net stadium at Chesterfield on Saturday, when the home side scored its fourth goal and Shrewsbury supporters and Chesterfield fans began goading each other.

Derbyshire Police spokeswoman Jill Walden said: “During this time a Chesterfield supporter ran from the halfway line of the East Stand toward the goal mouth at the North Stand where the away supporters were sited. He was apprehended by stewards and subsequently arrested.”

After the game, four Chesterfield fans managed to leave the ground through the away stand gates just as a group of Shrewsbury fans were leaving.

A fight ensued with six people being arrested and a 45-year-old Chesterfield fan injured.

Four men from Shrewsbury were arrested on suspicion of assault. Two men, aged 36, from Staveley and Grassmoor, were arrested for public order offences. All six were quizzed and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

A 34-year-old Chesterfield man was also arrested and received a police caution after he invaded the pitch.
