Elton John to play Shrewsbury’s Greenhous Meadow
Monday 25th October 2010, 12:00PM BST.
Rock Star Elton John is to headline a one-off Shropshire concert at Shrewsbury Town’s Greenhous Meadow Stadium, on June 12 next year.
The evergreen multi-millionaire performer will appear with his band and special guests at the football stadium. Tickets will cost £35, £50 and £75 and go on sale on Thursday at 9am.
The show will be the star’s first in Shrewsbury, though he has previously performed in Stoke-on-Trent at the Britannia Stadium, and made numerous appearances at different venues in Birmingham.
Today a spokesman for the concert promoter, Marshall Arts, said the star was looking forward to his summer gig in Shropshire.
Today’s announcement coincides with the release of Elton’s new album, The Union, which is a collaboration with sixties American music legend Leon Russell.
Russell famously played as a session musician for Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lee Lewis, Glen Campbell, The Beach Boys, The Byrds and The Rolling Stones and was also friends with The Beatles and Bob Dylan.
The spokesman for Marshall Arts added: “The Shrewsbury concert is not part of a new tour for 2011 – Elton is always on tour. He plays concerts continually. He’ll also have other dates in Europe next summer.”
Tickets for Elton John are available from Thursday at 9am by calling the following hotline numbers: 0844 209 7366; 0844 581 1302; 0844 847 2450 or visiting these online sites www.seetickets.com

A has been? who if you check his world tours for this year last year and next year is doing rather well with ticket sales, if that is a has been, what is current and doing well ?
A has-been who has just recorded an album tipped for a Grammy, sells out every one of the huge venues he plays and duets with todays stars like Lady Gaga, lots of people care!!!
Yeah…not up there with Tiny Talent..sorry..Tempah or that other genius Dizzy Rubbish eh?
Yeh, cos your named after a washing powder from the 60′s! What have you done? Better finish your homework in case mummy wants to see what a genius you are.

It would appear that quite a few people care Daz and why shouldn’t they? He’s not particularly my cup of tea, but I can appreciate his talent.
(Not the same Mark as the “Gay Meadow” commentator below).
Yeah he maybe ok for the older ones among us, oh and the people with friends called dorothy.
But come on, he aint exactly A list anymore is he….
I can’t stand the chap, or his music, but there’s no denying he’s A-list.
With a Daniel O’donnell and a Michael Jackson already on the books nothing surprises me..
Hope he doesn’t play in goal..

Missed you Frank, how is Betty? The clue is in the word “band” not “team” see? Simples.
Thanks Frank. He is a master showman.

Thanks Frank

Those Frank Spencer jokes were funny around the same time Elton John was good.

Am guessing your first name is No. Take me back, when Mr Manning would laugh at that, educated people will, however, feel sorry for you…..

ELTON JOHN YOU LEGEND! CANT WAIT!!

I have bought four tickets. Elton John is not my favourite singer but when such a big name is on your doorstep it would be a shame not to go. I am sure he is a briliiant showman and the atmosphere will be fab! Sometimes you have to keep an open mind and try something you might initially dismiss!!

18000 people expected to attend. No doubt thousands from far and wide, where will everybody park. It is bad enough with 5000 on match days.

As a music fan i have to agree with some of the comments above and wont be attnding. Unless you are actually a fan of eltons dittys ,that you could argue belong back in the late 70′s early 80′s why spend the money and help to inflate this mans ego and bank balance just because its an occasion! Its easy listening gone mad !

Absolutely brilliant to see him coming here, hopefully it will put the town on the map and open the doors for other big names (from the past and present) to come and play. It is rather a shame that some of your are slagging him off. I am not a fan but will be going and looking forward to a great night as I know he does put this on. He gives millions to charities every year (practically all he earns these days go to his various charities and foundations) He has every right to have an ego and he is the first to admit his crazy lifestyle was over the top. I wonder what he would think of the old codgers on this who are probably much younger than him – well in years anyway. Keep going Elton – I will be, for one, dancing to the Crocodile Rock, whilst looking out for the sharks (or possibly minnows) who write above!!

‘hopefully it will put the town on the map’
I’ve just looked at an OS map relating to about 1910, I can confirm Shrewsbury was included on that one, so perhaps Reg was around then too…..

this is bound to be a sell out and the stars will be queuing up to perform, status quo, jls, take that, the wurzels, kylie minogue, the list is endless. well done roland wycherley and the board

Not only is this good for residents but also good for the local economy. Hotels will be used, restaurants and other shops, taxis etc. I am sure it is in everyone’s interest to keep local jobs going. Possibly them that are complaining would rather Shrewsbury become, in the words of The Specials, Ghost Town. Live music regardless of who is playing it is good for musicians, young and old. Respect to all musicians – for the most of them it is a hard slog, who never get the recognition they deserve. Those who are lucky enough to succeed e.g. Elton, Status Quo, Kylie, Eminem, Floyd, Shakira, AC/DC, Garbage, Dizzie, etc etc are the ones who keep the drum stick beating for new generations.

“Not only is this good for residents but also good for the local economy. Hotels will be used, restaurants and other shops, taxis etc”
Absolutely. People would also do well to remember that as a return on the subsidy which the Shropshire Star are so keen to remind us about, Theatre Severn provides a similar and consistent boost to our local economy.

Oh dear, the town centre residents group won’t be able to complain about this one, how thoughtless of the organisers :-(
Report abuse
Yeah i agree but you know what they are like they will complain anyhow and say it’s going to disrupt the tranquility of nearby Meole Brace…..whoops I forgot there is no tranquility in Meole Brace is there….

I cannot believe how negative some people are. Sleepy shrewsbury actually has a huge gig over birmingham etc, and could set a precedent for many others.
If you’ve been to any of the big concerts in cities parking is ALWAYS an issue – ever tried getting out of NEC after a gig…
embrace it, 18000 people will enjoy it, maybe try & join in?
I am looking forward it not having the massive queue and the long drive home, think its fantastic that something like this is coming to Shropshire rather than us always having to travel 100 odd miles to go an see a decent concert. Let’s hope there is more to come!!!!
Now we have a real Gay Meadow, can’t wait to get a ticket.
Hopefully this will get the ball rolling and other big names will follow.
An A list metal band like Iron Maiden would be great.
I notice these tickets are already appearing on Ebay at ridiculously inflated prices! Ebay should not allow this to happen. It is different if somebody with tickets cannot make it due to genuine reasons at which point the tickets should only be sold at face value – this would stop people snapping them up with the sole purpose of making a huge profit and stopping others from being able to buy tickets.
