Oswestry leisure centre set to open in June 2011
Friday 22nd October 2010, 11:00PM BST.
Oswestry’s new leisure centre should be open by the beginning of June next year, despite a change of contractor.
Oswald Park, billed as a healthy living centre for the town, should have been celebrating its opening now, with its original completion due for autumn 2010.
But building work was halted when contractor, Frank Galliers Ltd went into financial difficulties. The centre, off the Shrewsbury Road, was midway through being constructed when work stopped overnight.
Shropshire Council, which is building the centre, appointed national building firm Graham Construction to finish the job.
Councillor Steve Charmley, cabinet member for leisure and an Oswestry area member, said: “We are hopeful that Oswald Park will be finished by the end of May or beginning of June, all being well.”
The centre, costing in the region of £8 million, will include sports and leisure facilities, a 25-metre swimming pool and a fitness suite.
