Market Drayton Corbet Arms revamp is a step closer

Plans to redevelop a landmark north Shropshire pub have moved a step closer.
At a planning meeting last night, Market Drayton Town Council unanimously voted to support plans to revamp the Corbet Arms in High Street.
The Grade II listed pub, built in the 17th century, was bought by Maroof Shah and his brother for £235,000 in August 2009.
Mr Shah, who owns Costcutters in Dalelands West and Queen Street post office, has unveiled plans to reopen the pub as a hotel, restaurant and leisure complex.
Redevelopment work started in March but was halted three months later when Mr Shah was informed that both planning permission and listed building consent was required.
The plans, estimated to cost up to £800,000, include creating a fitness centre, sauna room and restaurant serving English and Asian food.
Mr Shah also plans to refurbish the bedrooms and bathrooms, replace windows and renovate the ballroom to make it suitable for wedding receptions and other functions.
A design and access statement for the application said that the aim was to “reinstate the building as a residential hotel and restaurant for the enjoyment of tourists and local people alike.”
Shropshire Council is expected to decide on the plans at a meeting next month.
