Lead thefts at two Telford schools
Thursday 21st October 2010, 5:45PM BST.
Thieves snatched thousands of pounds worth of lead from a Telford school’s roof in two raids which happened in the space of just 48 hours, police said today.
Police said the independent St George’s Church of England Primary School had lead valued at about £3,500 stolen in the two incidents.
The latest theft happened some time between 5.50pm yesterday and 7am today.
About £3,000 worth of lead was stolen and the theft followed an identical incident at the school in London Road, St Georges, some time on Monday night or the early hours of Tuesday.
The thieves escaped with £500 worth of lead from the roof in the first incident.
Telford police spokesman Chris Ammonds said: “Some time overnight, for the second time in 48 hours, it appears that thieves climbed over the gates on to the school grounds and made their way to the school building itself.
“It appears the thieves then climbed on to the roof of the school and removed a large quantity of lead before making off with it.
“In total it is thought that around £3,000 worth of lead was stolen last night while around £500 worth had previously been stolen overnight on Monday.”
Anyone who thinks they might know who is responsible for the thefts is urged to contact Telford police as soon as possible on 0300 333 3000.
Mr Ammonds said: “Alternatively, please remember that Crimestoppers can also be called anonymously on 0800 555 111 if you’d rather leave information without getting directly involved yourself.”
