Mick Bates ‘assaulted paramedics’, court told
Wednesday 20th October 2010, 4:32PM BST.
Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates assaulted two paramedics and a staff nurse and verbally abused hospital staff after falling down stairs and injuring his head at a Cardiff restaurant, a court was told today.
The 63-year-old from Llanfair Caereinion, near Welshpool, denies three charges of common assault and three public order offences and was standing trial today at Cardiff Magistrates Court.
The court heard how Bates had attended the Charleston Restaurant in Caroline Street, Cardiff, where he fell down stairs and suffered a blow to his head on January 20, this year.
Miss Jessica Element, prosecuting, told the court how Bates had been out at the restaurant with Craig Williams, who had to call 999 after the fall.
She said police and ambulance crews arrived 2.20am and Bates was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
“Between the 999 call and arriving at hospital, he was aggressive to two paramedics,” she said.
“He assaulted two paramedics and then at the University Hospital of Wales, he also assaulted staff nurse Claire Morris.
“He was also abusive to a health care worker and abusive and aggressive to hospital staff,” she told the court.
The trial continues.
