Ludlow hospital land plan approved
Wednesday 20th October 2010, 10:18AM BST.
Health bosses have approved a deal to buy land for a new £27 million hospital in south Shropshire, it emerged today.
The West Midlands Strategic Health Authority gave Shropshire County Primary Care Trust the go-ahead to buy land at Ludlow’s Eco Business Park yesterday for a new hospital in the town.
Papers for yesterday’s meeting put the cost of acquiring the site at £1m.
The new facility, which will include the town’s two GP surgeries, will replace the current hospital on Gravel Hill.

However welcome a new hospital for Ludlow maybe, where is the money to come from to fund this project? And siting the new hospital and other healthcare facilities out of the town on the so-called Eco Park will surely do wonders for the environment. How are patients – whether for the hospital or for the doctors’ surgeries – supposed to get to these facilities, except by use of their cars.
I foresee that this scheme will end up years late, well overbudget, various parts of the new hospital’s facilities being cut not only to save on cost but just to get the building open in the first place and the laudable League of Friends will find its members manning bring and buy stalls to Kingdom come to provide funds for the most basic of equipment.

The hospital will provide many facilities (diagnostic tests, chemotherapy, dialysis) for which people currently travel many miles, there will be a great environmental benefit in these cases plus, more importantly, better quality of life for those patents. And please remember that not all of the GPs patients live in Ludlow, many of us already have to drive into town. People in Ludlow an use the town service/park and ride buses if they don’t want to (or can’t) use a car.
