Jail for woman who posed as a police officer to target the elderly
Wednesday 20th October 2010, 10:08AM BST.
A Shropshire woman who pretended to be a police officer and targeted pensioners during a string of distraction burglaries has been jailed.
Ann Marie Boden, 33, of no fixed abode, used several stories to get into people’s homes in Telford before she stole money to fund her drug habit, Shrewsbury Crown Court heard yesterday.
Judge Peter Barrie said Boden’s life had been ruined by her addiction to drugs.
He jailed her for 24 months after she admitted three burglaries and also ordered her to serve four months of a suspended sentence imposed in May.
Three other offences were taken into consideration.
Mr Stephen Bacon, prosecuting, said Boden used a variety of ruses to get into the homes of elderly people and then stole from them.
In one burglary she stole a handbag and bank card from an 83-year-old woman by claiming she was a police officer and needed to search her house, the court heard.
Mr Bacon said on another occasion Boden persuaded a 74-year-old wheelchair-bound man to go with her to a cashpoint to withdraw £300 and give it to her. She left him distressed in the street.
Mr Ian Durant, for Boden, said his client “became heartless and had no understanding of the trauma she caused to her victims”.
