Fears for future of 2,000 Donnington MoD base jobs

Government defence cuts could spell the end for the giant Donnington Ministry of Defence plant and see up to 2,000 workers lose their jobs, it was claimed by a union chief today.

The grim prediction was made by a Unite union chief who has vowed to fight the Coalition Government over its spending plans.

Brett Davis, Unite convenor at Donnington, spoke out after Defence Secretary Liam Fox yesterday announced that the jobs of one in four civilian defence staff – 25,000 nationally – would be axed.

Mr Davis said: “What we are hearing now is that it is going to be a savage attack on the number of jobs in the short term.

“In the longer term there is every possibility, if we don’t fight this, that the whole operation at Donnington could go.

“That will affect the 900 workers at the main site, another 400 from the Joint Supply Chain Services, 400 at the procurement arm at Sapphire House, the MoD fire service and security service on site, as well as all the associated contractors.

“The JSCS has already been under the threat of privatisation.”

The Defence Support Group at Donnington is one of the largest defence equipment support providers in the country to the UK Armed Forces.

Mr David added: “We have got to fight it, and we will. We will be joining union colleagues and others at a lobby in Southwater Square at 1pm today. We are also going to organise a public meeting this month.”
