Arson attack on Shrewsbury’s Herongate housing estate
Wednesday 20th October 2010, 7:01PM BST.
A troubled Shrewsbury housing estate was today targeted in yet more arson attacks as vandals lit a fire close to a nearby school.
Police and fire chiefs have warned the attacks in the early hours of the morning could have been much worse and claimed that if the culprits’ behaviour did not stop it could cost someone their life.
Guy Williams, station manager at Shrewsbury Fire Station, said he was hugely disappointed by the latest incidents in the Herongate area of the town following similar arson attacks in the area in the past few weeks.
He said they were initially called at 1am to a hedge and garden shed fire in Coldridge Drive but while the crew was putting out the fire, the vandals set fire to a wheelie bin further down the road.
He said another call was received at about 5am to reports of a fire involving rubbish at Greenfields Primary School in Hemsworth Way. Witnesses are urged to call 0300 333 3000.
Meanwhile, three youths arrested in connection with a spate of previous arson attacks at homes in Herongate remain on police bail pending further inquiries.
