Heavy plant machinery has moved into the site of open-cast mining at New Works in Telford. This week, we will be taking a look at how local people feel about the start of work at the site.

Good coverage by an excellent reporter!
This Guy spent an embedded night amongst the Protesters way back in early March, when it was cold, wet, and his Temt didnt have the poles needed to erect it.
Consequently, he spent the night in one of the Bender Tipis next to mine, and as I remember, a damn good night was had by all,and much debate, and sense was spoken.
Those at the Camp applaud his, and the Stars efforts with this one, the video clip is going around the world so everyone can see the true new face of Telford, thanks to Uk coal, Tourists, visitors, and people thinking of coming here – dont bother until this carnage is over.
    Maybe in around 8 years.
Perhaps after they have also taken the coal from the “Dawley 2 ” site, alongside the Dawley Road,( dont forget they already got planning permission to dig this nearly 10 years ago, but chose at the time not to – an extention to Huntington Lane ? ) and from StJohns wood, behind Lawley Church, will people then realise just what devaluation of their property is the result of good old Uk Coal, and when their health, and that of their children begins to fail, maybe they will find the guts tomake a stand.

Fantastic news, it’s about time these tree hugging, so called environmentalists got moved on so the job can be done and the area landscaped and turned into something that will benefit both local communities and visitors alike. As for ‘Tourists, visitors, and people thinking of coming here – dont bother until this carnage is over’ what a load of……media sensationalism.

In replyto “Pete Johnson “, I assume that his Mother is not facing blasting within 60 metres from her home, or an Earth bank 40 feet high, that will shut off the daylight to her home?
I also assume that his Mother will be able to have a lie in without a 7am heavy plant beper starting and continuing until 7pm, monday to Friday and half saturday as well?
I also assume that his Mother would like to be able to open the windows of her home without filling the house with dust?
I am sure that his Mother would greatly appreciate a devaluation of her hard worked for home to the point of being worthless until ths carnage ends?
Media sensationalism -no, reality to those living adjacent to this mine.
Perhaps Mr Johnson has an idea of the places in Telford that remain with extractable Coal reserves, and has chosen not to abide anywhere nearthem, thus escaping the misery of reality for those who now have no choice.

Hello Pat, I didn’t realise this campaign was about ‘nimbyism’ I thought it was all to do with protecting the environment, the land, the tree’s, the hedgerows, the wild life – all of which can be replanted, grow back and so on. And I’m sure whilst the work is ongoing some form of compensation will be offered and probably taken by any such resident and of course when the area is landscaped the nearby property values will increase. So are the ‘tree huggers’ there at the request of such house owners ? Pete.

In reply to “Pete”, Im sure he must have seen the boxes of evidence that covered Trees, animal life, dust, water, transport, coal type, people and environment, that were produced at Public Inquiry by UK Coal?
If so, he would realise that this is a many faceted campaign, not Nimbyism, and placing a real example of how one Old Ladys life will be affected is part of a very big picture.
He must also realise that while identified Coal reserves remain in the area, house prices will never rise again, for the spectre of opencasting will always be inthe shadows.
Those who find “tree huggers” offensive, would say that a very good rapport exists between those Protesters at the camp, and local people – in fact ask New Works residents who has caused most disruption, Uk Coal, in a matter of days, or the Protesters over the last 7 months?
By the way, NO form of compensation will be paid by UK Coal, they have set up a “community fund”, of which those on the Liason group of the Mine, mostly make up the allocations group.
Those affected the most, are probably going to receive the least from the fund.
Perhaps you might also ask Old Park residents how they now feel, knowing that the coal reserve thats been identified by the Coal Authority there has devalued their homes too?.
This was brought up at the recent Telford Spatial plan Public Inquiry, of which as little was mentioned about the Coal reserves in Telford as could be possibly achieved.
Coal reerves are an embarrassment to Telfordand Wrekin Council, for the Coal Authority will allow no homes to be built above a coal reserve as it “Sterilises” the mineral forever.
So, despite huffing and puffing, T&W remain impotent to do anything but shout, whilst the coal will be taken out by opencasting.
Perhaps you didnt glean the link between the need for England to have the same protection by 500 metre buffer zones as the rest of the UK?
My friends Mother faces the mine 15/20 feet from her front room window – and Old Park, and other parts of Telford will face exactly the same, for there is at present, no protection – or distance control over opencast mining in England relating to proximity to homes.
Im sure that when the next one opens up,hopefully, right next door to your home, you will be shouting the praises of opencast mining, how wonderful the noise and dust from the diggers, and how great it is to be unable to sell up and get the hell out.
    :)
