Shrewsbury police appeal over Bonfire Night celebrations
Tuesday 19th October 2010, 8:00PM BST.
Authorities in Shrewsbury today launched a plea for people’s help in a bid to prevent “injury, damage and disorder” during the Bonfire Night celebrations.
A joint strategy has been drawn-up to ensure celebrations on or around November 5 are not marred by isolated outbreaks of rowdy behaviour.
In recent years, the emergency services have had to deal with spontaneous fires in public places, vandalism and even attacks on fire engines.
But police said last year’s plan of action, drawn up by partner agencies, was successful in reducing the number of anti-social incidents.
Residents across Shrewsbury will again be asked to end their displays by 10pm and to ensure bonfires are burnt out by that time.
Any fires in public locations on housing estates still going beyond 10pm face being put out by the fire service. And any bonfires found to be unsupervised by responsible adults, will also be dismantled and put out.
Inspector Ian Rouse, in charge of policing in Shrewsbury, said: “We feel 10pm is an appropriate cut-off point as the vast majority of organised bonfires are finished by then. We are anxious to prevent unauthorised fires which are lit as a result of anti-social behaviour, often later than 10pm.”
He said the policy worked well last year, significantly reducing problems.
“We recognise bonfire nights are enjoyable occasions when families in the local community get together and socialise. We don’t want to be party-poopers for these kind of events. It’s purely to clamp down on the anti-social elements which impact on residents.
“Our aim is to prevent disorder and anti-social behaviour,” he added.
