Powys County Council changes to be discussed
Tuesday 19th October 2010, 12:29PM BST.
Controversial plans which could see Powys County Council moving to a new cabinet-style system, changing the way it is led will go before councillors this week.
The council is looking at moving to a leader and cabinet system but some councillors fear this would concentrate too much power in the hands of too few people.
If the move went ahead the council would no longer have a ruling board and shire meetings in Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Brecknockshire could be scrapped.
It has been holding public consultations on proposed changes which could lead to a new decision-making process being in place from May 2011.
At a special meeting of the council’s full committee in Llandrindod Wells in July councillors voted in favour by 36 votes to 21 of moving to a leader and cabinet system.
It will mean decisions currently made by all 73 councillors will be left in the hands of just 10.
And on Thursday members of the county council will discuss the plan at a full council meeting at the council’s headquarters in Llandrindod Wells.
