Oswestry council in talks over town’s public toilets
Monday 18th October 2010, 7:56AM BST.
Oswestry town councillors are exploring the possibility of taking over responsibility for the town’s public toilets after learning that they could be under threat of closure.
Shropshire Council says it is willing to enter negotiations with town and parish councils to devolve responsibility for the toilets to the smaller councils.
The switch would see the asset, provision and service of the toilets being handed over.
In a letter to the town council, head of Shropshire Council’s environmental services Steve Brown said: “Following the conclusion of any negotiations with town and parish councils, and the hopeful devolution of the service, any remaining public conveniences and their operation would have to be determined.
“This could result in withdrawal of the service by Shropshire Council (closure), however any other options will also be considered from the emerging picture of the responses, negotiations and conclusion of negotiations.”
Mr Brown said localising the service would “allow the local provision and management of public conveniences to be sustained and hopefully improved in our towns and villages”.
At Oswestry town council’s amenities meeting on Wednesday, Councillor Owen Jones said it was important to have toilets in the town centre.
Councillor Martin Bennett compared the devolution moves to a “game of cards”. He said if Oswestry Town Council agreed to take over the running of some services, Shropshire Council may take some responsibilities from the town council in return.
