Shrewsbury arson shop to reopen
Friday 15th October 2010, 11:29AM BST.
A Shrewsbury furniture store which was targeted in an arson attack will reopen tomorrow.
Firefighters were called to Multiyork in Windsor Place, after a fire broke out at the back of the store at about 1.30am on Monday morning.
Ten people were led to safety during the incident which destroyed much of the shop’s furniture.
New stock has been delivered for the r-opening but parts of the shop will remain partitioned off for repairs.
Sarah Herbert, marketing director for Multiyork, said: “The store will be reopening on Saturday, there was some smoke damage to the interior and parts of the shop will remain closed off where repairs are still being carried out.
“There have been various people at the store over the last week helping to get it back into shape. The areas which will remain closed off are towards the back of the store but it will only be a small area.
“I believe the investigation is still ongoing.”
The fire is believed to have started in a wheelie bin which was put into the doorway at the back of the store.
Thick black smoke caused damage and a number of flats above the shop were evacuated. Firefighters led 10 residents to safety.
Michelle Hancock, store manager, said about 80 per cent of the furniture was destroyed or badly damaged.
