Newport park’s £330,000 revamp still not finished
Friday 15th October 2010, 11:29AM BST.
A £330,000 revamp of a Newport’s Victoria Park which should have taken four weeks to complete is still not finished six months after it was started, it was revealed today.
The Telford & Wrekin Council project to improve the park began at the end of April but it has been beset by problems.
Council leader Andrew Eade said today the work was just not good enough and vowed to ensure it was now finished properly and quickly.
Councillor Eade, whose criticism has been echoed by residents, said: “Having visited Victoria Park over the weekend, it is very clear to me that complaints about standards of workmanship and the lack of lighting are absolutely justified and inexcusable.
“I am personally very disappointed that the delivery of this project has simply not been good enough.”
The work involves a new playground, landscaping, lighting, new fencing and creation of water features.
Council spokesman Nigel Newman said: “Work began on the park in the summer but has yet to be completed due to problems with planting drainage and the connection of the lighting.
“Contamination of the water course was also identified, which also caused a delay. This issue has now been resolved working with the Environment Agency and Severn Trent Water.”
Planting and landscaping only began in the last few days but Mr Newman said it was expected to be completed next week and work on a metal fence would start at the end of the month.
Councillor Eade added: “I am confident that by mid-November people will be able to see an end to the works at Victoria Park and I will personally ensure the scheme is properly completed.”
