Decision on Theatr Powys will be next year
Friday 15th October 2010, 6:59PM BST.
A decision on the future of a Mid Wales arts organisation, put in jeopardy by funding cuts, will not be made until next year, council bosses have revealed.
Powys County Council said today the future of Theatr Powys, in Llandrindod Wells, would be discussed as part of the general budget next year.
The organisation, which also includes a touring theatre company, was hit earlier this year when Arts Council Wales announced it would no longer be providing funding for the drama centre.
The cuts will come into effect from next April as part of a wave of Government cuts across the UK.
Arts Council Wales currently provides nearly half of the funding for the drama company and the county council said the decision to cut funding and the failure of the appeal had placed it in a difficult position.
Emma Savage, communications officer for Powys County Council, said today at the moment the council was still waiting to hear what affects the Government spending review would have on the authority.
She said: “Theatr Powys will be discussed in the general budget review next year. The council is facing cutbacks but we won’t know how severe it will be until the spending review is released next week.”
Councillor Gwyn Gwillim, the county’s board member for leisure and recreation, said the ACW provided 48 per cent of the group’s annual £457,810 budget.
He said the council’s annual budget allocation of £227,320 would not be able to support the retention of a full-time permanent company.
Nick Bourne, Tory AM for Mid and West Wales, said: “The rurality of Powys means that without that theatre, many schoolchildren would not have access to theatre. It is vital, and it is valued.”
