Oswestry’s Eagles pub punished over under-age drinking
Thursday 14th October 2010, 10:59AM BST.
An Oswestry pub is being forced to close for 48 hours after twice being caught selling alcohol to underage customers, police said today.
Police are invoking new powers to close down the Eagles Pub on the Bailey Head from 5pm on October 29 – over the busy Halloween weekend.
But today the pub’s new licensees, who only took over the venue this morning, said although the problems happened before they took on the pub they would crackdown hard on underage drinking.
New licensee Theresa Omeara said: “I was brought down here from Birmingham because I have been in the pub trade for 20 years.
“Underage drinking won’t be tolerated here – not by me.”
Tony Mantle, police licensing officer for the county, said the Eagles pub had failed to heed an earlier warning.
After failing a second test purchase operation, the pub has been banned from operating for much of the final weekend of the month, police said.
Mr Mantle said the pub was subject to a joint Shropshire Trading Standards and police test purchase operation at the end of July when underage volunteers bought alcohol without challenge.
