Cigarettes worth £4,000 stolen from Shrewsbury delivery lorry
Wednesday 13th October 2010, 2:55PM BST.
Up to £4,000 of cigarettes were stolen from the back of a truck as it made a delivery to a Shrewsbury off-licence, it was revealed today.
The incident happened at about 9.20am yesterday as a Booker delivery vehicle dropped off stock at Basra Stores in Grafton Mews, Harlescott.
Bosses at the shop said they believed about two or three people had got into the vehicle through an unlocked door at the back and had taken the cigarettes.
No goods were taken from the store itself.
Pam Basra, from the shop, said: “We have a delivery from Booker Cash and Carry and they were bringing the deliveries in when it happened.
“The driver closed the door but obviously didn’t lock it up properly and two or three people went in the van and took the cigarettes. They were saying afterwards that it was about £4,000 worth.
“It must have all happened in about two or three minutes, if that.”
Mrs Basra said that the incident was captured on the store’s CCTV, which has now been handed over to the police for analysis to see if officers can identify who was involved.
She said: “We have a regular delivery from Booker but the van has never been targeted before here.
“It’s on the CCTV and you can just see them getting into the van and then running off. We have passed it on to the police and they are now going to view that.”
Mrs Basra said the shop was very busy at the time of the incident with a number of customers inside the premises.
She said: “It’s a busy shop and there were a lot of people here at the time because the post office was also open.”
Nobody from Booker Wholesale or West Mercia Police was available for comment today.
