Mystery over events planned at Shrewsbury closure nightclub
Tuesday 12th October 2010, 8:30PM BST.
Mystery today surrounded a number of events planned to be held at a Shropshire nightclub which is due to close this Saturday.
Bosses of the Severn Cellars and Severn Warehouse yesterday announced the venue will cease trading this weekend leaving a question mark hanging over all future events lined up for it.
Among the big events planned is the Happy Mondays and Hacienda World Tour and a performance from German techno band Atari Teenage Riot.
Organisers of the Happy Mondays concert have released a statement on their website explaining that the gig will now be held at another venue.
It says: “Due to circumstances beyond our control, namely the closure of The Severn Warehouse and Cellars, we will be moving venues for the Happy Mondays and Hacienda World Tour event on November 20.
“The new venue will be announced next week. This event is 100 per cent taking place.”
Yesterday Mike Philbin, who leases the club, confirmed this weekend would be the last for the venue. It is not known if anybody will take on the lease.
The former Buttermarket and cellars was transformed with a £500,000 revamp near the end of last year before reopening under its new name on December 12, 2009.

The ‘Severn Cellars’ would have trouble organising a party in a brewery. Last year another local town nightclub ran into a spot of bother and closed…what did the ‘Severn Cellars’ do to welcome the new available customerbase?..er..er..nothing.
There has been an organisational shambles here for a while now and the last chicken has finally come home to roost. Let’s have someone who can run such a business properly like The Mean Fiddler organisational…and someone who can provide human standard beer too!

And their was me thinking it had closed ages ago, well the state of it when I drove past it a few weeks ago gave me that impression.

I believe that you (shropshire star) have got the information about the venue being open this weekend wrong. I walked past the buttermarket on monday on my way to the train station and there is no way the place will be open to the public again. The reason i say this is that it looked like every single thing was being removed, including all the electrics – so unless it is having a full re-wire before the last event on saturday i very much doubt it will be open.

Andrew,
it would seem that half a million quid doesnt cover a coat of paint nowadays :)

Perhaps it looked much better inside.

This is the 2nd time this venue has personally let me down, First it was NYE 2009 (where I was billed to DJ), when the event was pulled days before new year and now once again it shuts it’s doors without a care for the plan events (my band was billed to support ATR). I know the promoter of the gigs mentioned above and he has worked seriously hard to try and bring something back into Shrewsburys music scene, closures like this keep holding it back.
Someone needs to do something about the live music and night life scene in this town before it implodes into its own pathetic excuse for a town…. That is All!

What very sad news for our friends of the Shropshire Theatre Organ Trust whose lovingly cared-for Wurlitzer pipe organ (installed in the building) has brought so much pleasure to many people.
