Mother’s plea for clues to baby boy

A Shropshire woman today launched a poignant appeal to find out what happened to her baby boy after almost 50 years of heartache.

Carol Bowdler’s first child Harry was stillborn in 1966, but she does not know where his body was taken or what happened to him.

Today she pleaded to the people of Shropshire to come forward with any information they may have, because she wants a place to properly grieve for her baby.

Now living in Berwick Wharf, Uffington, near Shrewsbury, Carol said she was on the verge of a nervous breakdown for two years after the tragedy and was unable to ask any questions.

She said the pain of that time had prevented her from revisiting the traumatic event until now.

“My daughters wanted to find out about their brother and I know that we don’t have unlimited time on this earth,” she said.

“While I am still here I would dearly love to find out what happened to my son so I can say a proper goodbye to him.  It would be like finding the final piece of jigsaw.”

Carol said her baby was born at Cross Houses at the former Workhouse Hospital and at a time when women were not encouraged to grieve openly.

“I just hope someone might know something and might be willing to come forward.”
