Telford driver died before crash
Friday 8th October 2010, 4:16PM BST.
A man pronounced dead after his car ploughed into a crash barrier in Telford was taken ill at the wheel moments before the smash, police today revealed.
Police today named the driver as 62-year-old William Stephen Nicholls, from Stafford.
Chris Ammonds, spokesman for Telford police, said: “We can confirm now the man died of natural causes and not as a result of the collision itself.
“Thankfully no-one else was involved in the collision. We would, however, still be interested to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident.”
He said the Telford & Wrekin coroner, Mr John Ellery, had been informed.
A police community support officer and paramedics attended the crash at about about 5.30pm on Wednesday, at the Ketley Dingle Interchange, above the M54. They tried to resuscitate Mr Nicholls at the scene and on the way to the Princess Royal Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Anyone with information should contact Telford police on 0300 3333000.
