A small south Shropshire village was at the centre of a national news broadcast as comedian Tony Hawks came to the county to promote his new film.
Channel 4 cut to a live interview with Tony just before 7.30pm as he was preparing to introduce the film of his best-selling book, Round Ireland With A Fridge, at Lydbury North Village Hall near Bishop’s Castle.
Tony was interviewed by presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy live on Channel 4 News for his reminiscences about comedian Sir Norman Wisdom, who died on Monday aged 95.
The two travelled to Albania, where Sir Norman enjoyed a cult following, in order to try to get Tony a chart hit as part a book he was writing called “One Hit Wonderland”.
Tony was interviewed against a backdrop of the audience waiting to watch his film.
He has been on tour promoting the film of “Round Ireland with a Fridge”, adapted from his bestselling book.
Tony introduced the film, took questions at the end and stayed on to sign books.
More than 100 people packed into the village hall for the event.
Annie Keeley said: “It’s a very nice, quirky film. It’s a very good example of how to slow down.”
Pete Bonynge, at the screening with his wife Karen, said: “We’re enjoying it very much, it’s a whimsical little film and I was very surprised to see the man himself here, just walking through the car park.”
After the film Tony talked about making it and about some of his other projects including an upcoming trip to Moldova to help expand a centre there he helped found.
He said: “The hardest thing was definitely writing the film. It was so difficult because you’ve got this thing that already works and people are telling you there has to be a journey in the film.”
