Bright clothes plea for funeral of Telford youth Mark Houghton
Tuesday 5th October 2010, 8:59PM BST.
The parents of a Shropshire teenager whose body was found close to a busy road today made a special request for mourners to wear “odd girls socks” to his funeral.
John and Pam Houghton said their son Mark was a bright, happy person and would have wanted everyone to wear the brightest clothes they owned.
More than 300 youngsters are expected to pay their last respects to the 18-year-old at his funeral service at Holy Trinity Church, Waterloo Road, Hadley, Telford, at 2pm on Thursday followed by burial at Hadley Cemetery on Hadley Park Road.
All mourners are invited to follow the hearse from the family home at 14 Hurleybrook Way, Leegomery.
Mark, a student at New College, was found hanged at the side of Whitchurch Drive, close to the Princess Royal Hospital, on September 22.
Urging nobody to wear black, Mrs Houghton said: “The brighter the clothes the better. Also everyone, male and female, should wear really bright, girly socks but the socks must be odd.
“People can swop with a friend on arrival at the service if needs be.”
His parents plan to launch a support group in Mark’s memory after the funeral for other parents who have lost a child. Mr Houghton has already registered the domain name Remember OurChildren.co.uk.
