Malinslee road sign wrong ‘for 20 years’
Saturday 2nd October 2010, 5:00PM BST.
An “L” of a mistake on a road sign in Telford has remained uncorrected for about 20 years, it was revealed today.
The sign, on the slip-road of the Eastern Primary by Telford Railway Station, shows drivers the way to Malinslee – but spells the Malinslee with three Ls, instead of two.
Hundreds of thousands of motorists have been faced with the name “Mallinslee” instead of Malinslee since the sign was put up but it has never been put right.
The botched spelling is the latest to come to light in the borough after the Shropshire Star revealed earlier this week how an incorrect road sign on the edge of Ironbridge Gorge had yet to be put right.
The sign near the Jiggers Bank roundabout, reported to Telford & Wrekin Council a year ago, wrongly spells Horsehay “Horeshay”.
StrangeMalinslee councillor Kuldip Sahota said: “I have noticed the spelling on the sign over the years.
“I have been around for 10 years but it must have been like that for about 20 years.
“Each time I see it I think I must report it and get something done but then events take over, things happen and I forget.
“It is strange because everywhere else in Telford where Malinslee is on a road sign it is spelt correctly.
I would love to know who thought it had three Ls in it?”
Fellow Malinslee councillor Phil Homer said: “I am surprised a council road sign has lasted 20 years.
It’s not an old spelling for the place as far as I know.”
Councillor Adrian Lawrence, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for environment and rural area, said: “The sign is relatively old and is planned to be corrected as part of a major contract to repair and replace signage across the borough which is running between now and next March.”
He said the council was investing nearly £250,000 to improve borough road signs, and a corrected sign is being picked up as part of that programme.

just get some white paint & fix it yourself,
it’ll save about £10k the why the council like to chuck money about.

I’m hardly surprised that the spelling is incorrect, after all, there can’t be that many towns that have ‘strangemalinslee’ councillors.

I’m wondering what is so strange about the “StrangeMalinslee councillor”???

Dear Sir or Madam
Why don’t you leave this sign as it is instead of changing it, as it has been up for 20 years
Yours Faithfully

Strange? That’s a bit stiff! He only lives down the road in Ketley, and Phil lives in Spain, but it’s a bit rude calling them strange!
