Public meeting tonight over plan to raise Bridgnorth parking charges
Friday 1st October 2010, 2:30PM BST.
Protesters were expected to turn out in force tonight for a public meeting to discuss controversial plans to increase parking charges in Bridgnorth.
The meeting is being held in Castle Hall, West Castle Street, at 7pm as part of the consultation over Shropshire Council’s parking strategy in market towns.
There are worries about increased parking charges with Shropshire Council set to examine a proposal to triple fees on the Old Smithfield from April 1.
Under the new plans it would cost £5.50 to park on there all day.
Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, who will be at the meeting, said that a period of free car parking in the main shopping street was essential in maintaining the “economic vibrancy of the town”.
He said: “I will be proposing that up to 45 minutes on-street free parking is maintained in market towns which don’t have park and ride.
“Having investigated the potential for park and ride in Bridgnorth we will be recommending that parking on-street in Bridgnorth remains free.”
The consultation will end on October 13.

We know that council’s are strapped for cash but don’t tell me let me guess…my guess is that by some extraordinary unconnected random coincidence there just happens to be a large supermarket or two outside the vacinity of Bridgnorth town centre.
