Oswestry trouble spots hit with alcohol control orders
Friday 1st October 2010, 5:00PM BST.
Alcohol control orders have been placed on 11 troublespots in and around Oswestry, with the new measures set to be operational in a fortnight.
Shropshire councillors backed the move at a meeting yesterday and hinted that more areas of the town could be included in the booze crackdown in the future.
The imposition of the Designated Public Places Orders (DPPOs) helps police clamp down on anti-social behaviour.
The move restricts public consumption of alcohol in the 11 areas, as well as the Becks and Burrs Fields area of Shrewsbury.
The areas of Oswestry included are Cae Glas Park, Brogyntyn Park, the Gatacre sports ground, Castle Bank, parish church grounds, and central car park.
Two areas in Weston Rhyn, one in Chirk Bank, one in Gobowen and one in St Martins are also included.
The orders do not make the areas alcohol ban zones but it does make it an offence if someone refuses to comply with a police officer’s request to stop drinking.
Recommending the orders for approval yesterday, Councillor Mike Owen said they were likely come into effect on October 15 and advisory signs would be put up at the various sites.
Oswestry councillor Martin Bennett seconded the recommendation He regretted that other areas in Oswestry would probably be put forward.
Councillor Miles Kenny said it was “dismal state of affairs” that the council had to undertake such action
He said more needed to be done to address the underlying problems such as the availability of alcohol
Councillor David Evans, South Shropshire member, welcomed the move and said there was a “major problem” in Craven Arms.
