Shrewsbury jeweller sends out warning after raid
Thursday 30th September 2010, 10:37AM BST.
A Shropshire jeweller has sent out a UK-wide warning to colleagues to be on their guard after up to £20,000 worth of jewellery was stolen from his shop in the town centre.
Peter Green, owner of Fabricius Green in High Street, Shrewsbury, said he feared the thieves, who appeared to be foreign, might have now fled abroad.
But the owner of the family-run business said he wanted other jewellers to remain vigilant in case his jewels made their way into other stores across the UK.
Bracelets, earrings and engagement rings were taken from the store on Tuesday lunchtime.
Mr Green said: “We have been trying to get pictures together to send to the Safer Gem Partnership.
“The partnership is a way of spreading news about thefts to other jewellers across the country so they have a description of the items which have been stolen in case people come in looking to melt down the metals or remove the diamonds.
“It is also a way of providing a description of the people who carried out the theft.”
Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: “The investigation is continuing and we are today renewing the appeal for information that might be helpful.
“If people did see anything suspicious in or around the jewellers, at the time of the incident, involving a group of four to six people, we are urging them to contact police.”
Anyone with information can contact police on 0300 333 300.
