Shrewsbury a hotbed for cycle thefts
Thursday 30th September 2010, 12:45PM BST.
More than 30 bicycles have been stolen in Shrewsbury within two months, police revealed today.
Cyclists are now being urged to help stop bike crime following the spate of thefts to hit the town.
West Mercia Police has now launched its Thieves Never Tyre – Put the Brakes on Bike Crime initiative to halt the problem.
Between the beginning of August and the middle of September the force said 36 bikes were stolen from the town, with figures for the past two weeks not yet available.
The new initiative, part of West Mercia Police’s Safe and Secure campaign, offers hints and tips to cyclists on keeping their bike secure, while officers on patrol will stop-check riders of bikes that fit the description of those stolen.
Anyone found to be in possession of a suspected stolen bike will be arrested.
A 22-year-old man was arrested in Shrewsbury on Monday on suspicion of theft and the bike he was riding seized.
A second suspected stolen bike was also taken from his address and the man has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.
Five suspected stolen bikes were also found and seized from an address in Abbey Foregate on September 14.
Anyone with information is urged to call police on 0300 333 3000, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

It’s about time the upstanding citizens of Shrewsbury raised a posse of Freemen and women led by the High Sheriff to catch these bike thieves as they pedal back to Telford…..
