Shrewsbury Town Council to join Facebook

Shrewsbury Town Council is logging on to Facebook in a bid to reach out to a younger generation and embrace the 21st century.

Members agreed to set up a council page on the social networking site at yesterday’s finance and general purposes committee meeting held in the Guildhall.

Despite a number of councillors admitting they had never used the website they all agreed it could only do good to promote the council’s work and keep people up-to-date with news.

Peter Nutting, chairman of the committee, admitted he was no expert with the internet but he said the council must do all it could to communicate with the people of Shrewsbury.

He said: “My mobile phone is 12 years old and on the verge of packing up but I believe we should be doing everything we can to engage with people including joining Facebook.

Councillor Dean Carroll said: “We have got to be seen to be moving into the 21st Century.

“I’ve seen some of the other council’s Facebook pages and I think we should be able to catch up pretty easily.”

In a further bid to reach out to the public the council will be approaching the “big five” supermarkets in the town to see if they can use on-site notice boards to put up council news.

OH GOD it gets better and better, NO expert on the computer are these the lap tops issued to the councillors at the tax payers expense a few years ago, and Mr Nutting knows little about the internet ????? who said they were not with it clearly they are not

Why are they approaching the big supermarkets and not also the local shops? Shrewsbury’s Indoor Market, for example, would be a good location.

Ditto what Andrew Finch says, councillors have been having private tete a tetes with council officers on their intranet for years now, do they think we’re thick or something?

Some councils now film planning meetings and you can watch them live on their website. Now that would be an eye opener while we are talking about people being thick!

Can’t imagine that Tescos Shrewbury will be putting up a council notice board in store as surely this would count as non grocery space.

Oh what a surprise – yet another initiative with the supermarkets while the rest of town can go hang – what a bunch of – well I’m sure you can insert your own description.

They have shown yet again their true colours – and are rapidly becoming a laughing stock in the community I begrudge them any expenses – the are a complete shower!

    Woo.

From my experience, this will only add to the already unintelligible dross on facebook.

How long until the council’s messages appear here:

Shouldn’t people that are responsible for running the council and managing substantial budgets be just a little technically savvy?

Not suggesting that they should all be programmers, but surely being cognisant of what is available to make their life, and ours, easier should be expected.

And, having a 12 year old phone is not a badge of honour, more like an indicator that you are a fossil.
