Councillors seek constant review of Shrewsbury parking fees

Shrewsbury Town Council has called for a “constant review” of new parking charges which could see traders and visitors paying more to park all day in parts of the town.

Members backed Shropshire Council’s draft car parking strategy at a finance and general purposes committee meeting held yesterday at the Guildhall.

But calls were also made for better season ticket deals and a 10 minute period of grace for people making fleeting visits to the town.

Consultation over the new countywide parking measures comes to an end on October 3 and plans will be go before Shropshire Council in December and put into action next April.

Among the proposals are suggested changes to the St Julian Friar’s Car Park which could see new short stay charges introduced. Long stay could also rise to £5 for up to 10 hours. Abbey Foregate Car Park could see a rise to £4 for up to 10 hours, while the main Frankwell Car park could also rise by £1.50 for longer stay to £5 for 10 hours.

However, the council supported new plans to make it free to park in the town centre from 6pm instead of the current 8pm cut-off in a bid to boost evening trade.

    “Constant review”?

It’s a bit like the recent story about switching the street lights off at night.

Good or bad, can’t councillors make decisions quickly and then stand by them?

One begins to suspect that “constant reviews” and “trials until next year” are really another way of saying “need to find something to do to justify our existence”.

Too true Rodney. I’ll give them a review and I don’t even live in the UK, I get all my news from this site, (thank you Star). Overpriced parking is killing the town centre. Reduce or abolish these charges and folk might just start using the place again. Town centre shops are competing with the out of town giants, therefor they need help not another misguided piece of blinkered legislation.
Can’t see it happening though, as Rodney pointed out, it will give some of them something to do.
