Work begins to upgrade Onibury level crossing
Monday 27th September 2010, 2:23PM BST.
Major work to upgrade a level crossing on one of Shropshire’s busiest roads has started – but no action is being taken over raised parts of the railway track which have been branded dangerous by local councillors.
Temporary traffic lights were set up at Onibury level crossing, near Craven Arms, on the A49 over the weekend and both barriers and signals warning of oncoming trains have been taken down to be replaced.
The works will last about three weeks but will not include any repairs to the road over the crossing, which has sunk after years of heavy goods vehicles pounding over it.
Residents and councillors in Onibury have claimed raised sections of railway line on the crossing could potentially puncture tyres on vehicles using the route.
Network Rail officials have previously claimed work is required on supporting beams and have said any work to improve the junction would cost in the region of £25,000.
During this morning’s rush-hour there were long queues of cars heading northbound at the crossing, while motorists in Onibury were having to negotiate their way through traffic without the assistance of signalling coming out of the village.
Mavis Choong, press officer for Network Rail, said the work was being treated as a separate issue to the issues with the road over the crossing.
