Women sworn in as first Shrewsbury Freemen

A Shropshire tradition lasting 1,000 years – and one of the last bastions of the old all-male establishment – has moved into the 21st century with women sworn in as Freemen of Shrewsbury for the very first time.

Seven women made their claims to become a Burgess of the town at the Installation of Freemen ceremony, which took place yesterday at the Guildhall, in Shrewsbury. It was also the first time it had been carried out by Shrewsbury Town Council.

A total of 10 people were sworn into the previously all male guild.

The Mayor, Councillor Kath Owen, welcomed the descendants of Shrewsbury’s Burgesses and said it was a “special day”.

Councillor Owen, whose husband and son are Freemen, said: “Congratulations to everyone here today, especially to the Lady Freemen on this special day. It is an honour to welcome you all.”

One of the first women to be bestowed the title was Susan Butler, 63, of Bayston Hill, Shrewsbury, whose grandfather was sworn a Freeman in 1924.

She said: “I am a sixth generation Freeman, the title has been in my family for more than 200 years, so it is a great honour to be here today. I thought the title had died with my father so it is great that now the tradition can carry on through me and my sons.”

Lionel Morris, chairman of the Guild of Freemen of Shrewsbury, said: “This is the first time women have been granted the title since the Act of Parliament in 2009 so this is certainly a part of history.”

Helen Ball, clerk to the town council said: “It was fantastic to be a part of history with the swearing-in of the first Lady Freemen of the town of Shrewsbury.

“The Town Council is highly honoured to have been involved in such a special occasion. Congratulations to all ten of our new Freemen and women.”

Those receiving Freemen status included Jamie Barton, Kenneth Barton, Kerry Barton, Susan Butler, Sheila Cowton, Marjorie Day, Rosemary Shotton, Vivienne Vernon, Andrew Williams and Steven Charles Williams.

Totally out of touch with reality.

In the midst of a recession and massive cuts can we afford this idiocy.

Signifies all that is wrong with Shrewsbury.

Am I the only person out here that hasn’t got the foggiest idea of who these people are or what they have done for Shrewsbury?
    Presumably wheels within wheels….

What is all this rubbish about – what is the point of the Freeman title. It seems like a lot of fuss about nothing.

It reads more a case of who you are rather than what you’ve done, I’ve never heard of any of them so they’re obviously doing a sterling job

Having lived in the county for the past 25yrs, I can’t say I know of any of them, or indeed their claims to fame.
Perhaps they’re all at The Samaritans and that’s why neither my neighbours or I have heard of them.

    Load of pseudo-medieval claptrap.

Like all the nonsense with the “Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire” – just an opportunity for one of the “great and good” to dress up in a Ruritanian army uniform.

…and can someone tell me exactly what “Ladies in Waiting to the Queen” do? (Unless they just sit around waiting…..).

Is the town crier not the focal point of the town?
Glad to see that we are moving with the times and that 2 attractive blondes will be representing our town. Good for them if they feel passionate about something they should do it. Who says sex doesnt sell

Who mentioned the Town Crier? – Shrewsbury’s Town Crier is Martin Wood, a 7′ 2″ bloke with a long beard – I can’t find him in the photo….perhaps you’re mistaking the Mayor for him?

And seeing as there are at least 4 women in the photo who most people would describe as blonde perhaps you’d like to come on here with your full name and address and then tell us who the “2 attractive blondes” are?

Bl**dy ‘ell – and I get accused of living in the dark ages!!!

It’s bad enough women thinking they are clever/smart getting on to the religion bandwagon without them sinking to wanting to be part of this sort of charade too.

The worst of it is that we pay for this pompous c**p.

Now you come to mention it I’m sure Hagrid wore a hat like that.

It does cost John Jones. I’m sure they had a nice little tray of sarnies laid on.

Point here is that they are given some antiquated title, by an antique post-holder dressed in 17th century costume, not because they have contributed anything, or deserve it, but simply because an ancestor had the title.
