Oswestry traders hit by power cut
Friday 24th September 2010, 11:29AM BST.
Oswestry traders were left to count up the cost of a power cut after about 200 homes and businesses lost their electricity supply for up to two hours.
Shops were forced to close after the energy supply went off at about 1pm yesterday.
One supermarket had to use its emergency procedures to usher out scores of customers.
Scottish Power estimated about 200 customers were affected and it took until 3pm for the last customer to be reconnected.
The power company said the problem was caused by a cable fault in Oswald Road.
During the afternoon businesses along one side of Cross Street, Leg Street, Beatrice Street and Station Road closed their doors.
Frank Cromie, manager of Morrisons supermarket, said the store was busy when the power went out.
He said: “There were about 50 to 60 people in the store and staff too. They didn’t know what was going on. They were quite anxious about it but we have got a policy where we were able to get them out. We had emergency lights too.”
Julie Day, travel administrator from Liberty Travel in Cross Street, said: “Our electrics, phone lines and computers were down. We were at a standstill and we couldn’t even make a cup of coffee.”
Kirsty Adams, manager of Toni & Guy, said she rescheduled appointments because of the power loss.
“We couldn’t dry people’s hair, get into our appointments or open tills.”
A beauty therapist from Bubblegum in Leg Street said: “We had no sunbeds and no waxing and we had to change appointments.”
Staff at Eric Roberts & Sons butchers had to turn customers away.
Jane Holmes, a spokeswoman for Scottish Power, said: “Everything was back on at about 3pm.”
