Oswestry home at risk of closure
Friday 24th September 2010, 11:29AM BST.
One of Oswestry’s longest established residential homes is under threat of closure, bosses confirmed today.
The plan to close Abbeyfield House, in Vyrnwy Place, is a “tragedy” for the town and for its dedicated staff, members of the home’s friends committee said.
And town mayor Elaine Channon said she was “horrified” by the plans.
Derek Francis, chairman of the friends committee, said the plans, which would see four staff losing their jobs and two residents rehoused, were “very disturbing”.
He said: “A lot of voluntary time and effort has gone into the home from our group and it is very disturbing to hear it is likely to close. A meeting was held on Wednesday and our understanding is that it has been recommended to the chief operating officer that it should close.
“The recommendation is likely to be approved in two or three weeks and the home will close soon afterwards.”
Samantha Alleyne, from Abbeyfield, said: “We can confirm that Abbeyfield House in Oswestry is under review for closure. However a decision for final closure is still pending.
“Attempts made by the local and regional team, who have endeavoured to raise the profile of the house in the past few months to attract new residents have proved unsuccessful.”
