Ludlow could set up green service
Friday 24th September 2010, 11:29AM BST.
Ludlow could get a new cardboard recycling service funded by part of a £400,000 grant, it has emerged.
Ludlow the town has been awarded the money by Shropshire Council as part of the £3 million Market Towns Revitalisation Programme decided by the cabinet in June.
Veronica Calderbank, clerk for Ludlow Town Council, said today the town authority had held a very positive meeting with representatives of Shropshire Council last night.
She said: “I have a scheme I’m working up to try looking for land and premises to put up a skip for cardboard recycling. We can get an income stream from it and offer the service to the rest of town.”
Ms Calderbank said cardboard waste from the town’s markets could be recycled and the grant from the revitalisation programme could meet the set up costs of the project.
She said it could then be paid for by retailers paying the council to take the cardboard away.
Ms Calderbank said she had asked about the future of the Coder Road Depot in Ludlow, as Shropshire Council workers have recently moved out of the site.
She said: “If it’s not too expensive we might be able to rent that.” Ludlow, Church Stretton, Bridgnorth, Oswestry, Market Drayton and Whitchurch have all been awarded specific amounts as part of the programme, adding up to £2.5 million.
Bids for the remaining £500,000 can be submitted by 11 other towns before March 2011, with a decision on funding expected in April next year.
The areas able to apply are Shifnal, Wem, Albrighton, Broseley, Ellesmere, Highley, Cleobury Mortimer, Craven Arms, Bishop’s Castle, Much Wenlock and Pontesbury and Minsterley.
In an officer’s report on the programme, Shropshire Council said the aim would be for every town to receive funding for one project. The maximum they can apply for is £50,000.

So money can be found for this new scheme, however commendable it may be, but not to maintain the bio dugester up at the so-called eco park … Re-cycle cardboard locally, but transport food waste half way across the county for re-processing. Utter madness.

Agree. I’m all in favour of cardboard recycling, and glad that money has been found to get it off the ground.
But the town’s food businesses have just been told that the commercial food waste recycling scheme is stopping due to cutbacks. Someone please explain.

I have to totally agree with the people above. We can already recycle cardboard in our green bins. What we should spend the money on is the food waste collection which is far more environmentally friendly as the waste doesn’t have to travel far and is made into a useful product.
