Warning to motorists as flash floods predicted
Thursday 23rd September 2010, 11:22AM BST.
Parts of Shropshire could be hit by flash flooding today with motorists warned to brace themselves for problems on the county’s roads.
A severe weather warning was issued by weather forecasters.
The Met Office today predicted “with 80 per cent or greater confidence” that severe weather would be seen across the region up until 6pm today.
The worst of the weather is expected to hit mid afternoon – and while it is only likely to be a fleeting deluge, forecasters have said the impact could have a greater impact for areas with poor drainage such as Shrewsbury.
Barry Gromett, a spokesman for the Met Office, said: “There are lot of areas around the country which could be subject to heavy thundery showers today.
“The showers are expected to be heavy over a short period of time and are only likely to cause temporary problems and although scattered the key time for the showers is likely to be in the mid-afternoon.”
He added: “The main risks will occur in areas where water struggles to drain away.
“The rain will be fleeting, but with the possibility of flash floods the impact for a time could be severe.
“We have had a noticeable dry period recently and that will help as more problems occur when there has been persistent rainfall and the ground is already saturated.”
The Met Office has made further warnings that short bursts of rainfall may see more than 20 millimetres of rain fall in the space of three hours.
The organisation urged motorists to take care on the region’s roads.

“forecasters have said the impact could have a greater impact for areas with poor drainage such as Shrewsbury”
Never mind, as we have been told on here recently by a Shrewsbury resident, the people there tend to be more cultured.
So it will no doubt provide inspiration for a few paintings, poems and symphonic masterpieces….

“80 per cent or greater confidence”
Well, it is 2pm and it has been a fine day in Shrewsbury so far. There is some darker clouds floating about now, but the Met Office does not inspire any confidence. I predict with a much higher amount of confidence, that a few showers is more likely. Not sensationalist or headline grabbing, but nearer the truth.

Coming up for 5pm and still no sign of rain!
