Two rescued in Telford suspected arson attack

A 23-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl had to be rescued from the upper floor of a Telford block of flats after a fire broke out following what police suspect may be an arson attack.

The two people were helped through a bathroom window by firefighters using ladders as smoke started to fill their flat at the three-storey property at Beaconsfield, Brookside, last night.

Neither was seriously hurt and both were assessed for smoke inhalation by ambulance crews at the scene.

Police and fire investigators were today trying to find out the cause of the fire.

A woman in her mid-30s was in police custody today after being arrested on suspicion of arson and endangering life.

The emergency services were called at 6.35pm yesterday after a neighbour heard a smoke alarm.

Flames and smoke could be seen issuing from a window of the ground floor flat when firefighters from Tweedale and Telford Central Fire Stations arrived.

The ground floor living room was severely damaged after the flames spread.

Other parts of the flat and communal areas in the block suffered smoke damage.

Neil Maguire, watch manager at Tweedale, said the fire would have spread further if a neighbour had not raised the alarm and he urged people not to ignore fire alarms. Mr Maguire said the property was evacuated.

Murray MacGregor, from the West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: “A male, 23, and a female, 16, were in a top floor flat, they had suffered very minor smoke inhalation.”
