Shrewsbury motorists face weeks of diversions
Wednesday 22nd September 2010, 11:29AM BST.
Town centre motorists are facing weeks of diversion misery as work gets under way to give Shrewsbury’s gas supply a much-needed major overhaul.
National Grid will be installing temporary traffic lights on a main route into the centre and closing a road through the town for three weeks.
The work, which started this week in Wyle Cop, is to renew a gas main.
In October the work will move into Beeches Lane and Town Walls which will mean three weeks of traffic diversions.
The old metal pipe along Wyle Cop from the English Bridge to the Lion Hotel will be replaced with a hard-wearing plastic pipe.
Work will start at 8am and continue until 11pm daily and utility bosses said where possible, work would also be carried out over the weekends to ensure it is completed before Christmas.
National Grid project manager Steve Mullock said during the day traffic will continue to flow as normal but in the evenings temporary two-way traffic lights will be used.
He said: “Where possible the new pipe will be inserted through the old one to reduce the amount of digging required and minimise inconvenience to motorists and the public.
“I appreciate that work of this kind can cause disruption however it is a short term inconvenience for a long term benefit. The new plastic pipe we are laying is very hard wearing and, if undisturbed, will last for up to 80 years with little or no maintenance.
“We are doing everything we can to ensure the job is completed as quickly as possible by working extended hours and at weekends. Wyle Cop is a very busy route into the town and so we will be keeping the traffic flowing as much as possible.”
