Work on hold as human remains found in Broseley
Monday 20th September 2010, 11:29AM BST.
Work on an extension to a former church in Shropshire has come to a halt after builders unearthed old human remains.
The remains, believed to date back up to 200 years, were discovered outside the former Birchmeadow Baptist Chapel in Broseley.
County achaeologists are now investigating the find, made in a drainage trench being dug outside the building, which is now Birchmeadow Community Centre.
Pipe-laying work to the Broseley Town Council-owned centre has now been put on hold until the remains are removed.
Broseley Mayor Councillor Carol Cooper said Shropshire Council officials were due at the site this week to arrange the removal of the remains.
She added: “It is not a surprising find as it is a former church and graveyard.
“We are not really sure where the graveyard was but we suspect the remains could be a couple of hundred years old.
“We have been in contact with the appropriate authorities and have received certification from the Home Office.
“Sadly, until the remains are removed, work has had to stop on the drainage channel which means that we can’t use the plumbing in the community centre.”
Work is currently under way on a £48,000 extension to the centre.
