Mid Wales politicians say the rights of the people of Llanwddyn must be protected in the impending sale of the Lake Vyrnwy Estate.

Members of the Montgomeryshire constituency of Plaid Cymru have backed its party’s worries over the sale of the 125-year lease by Severn Trent.

David Thomas, vice-chairman of the constituency, said: “It is very worrying that somebody could take the 125-year lease and just take profit from the farm, commercial properties, moorland, water and timber without putting in the investment the Estate desperately needs.

“Plaid Cymru is calling for the interests of the tenants, the environment and the local economy to be the primary consideration when Severn Trent decides on its preferred bidder.”

He also praised the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, which has called on the Government of Wales to take control of the Estate.

“Perhaps they fear that a private commercial lessee would not be able to safeguard the environment of the lake and hills, crucial to attracting visitors?”

Mr Thomas said: “Apart from Ministry of Defence land this is the largest estate in Wales effectively in ‘foreign’ hands as the local residents and tenants have very little say over how the estate is managed.”
