Shrewsbury nightclub gets metal detector after stabbing

A new £4,000 airport-style metal detector has been installed at a Shrewsbury nightclub in the wake of a stabbing near the premises.

Mr Robert Lucas, owner of Topcats in Mardol – shortly to be renamed Evolution – said he had heard of a number of incidents where young people had been carrying knives in the town.

He said the new detector arch had been installed as a direct result of the stabbing of Luke Rawlings in Mardol last month.

Mr Rawlings, 22, of Armdale, Robertson Way, Shrewsbury, was attacked by three men near Topcats on August 29.

Officers attended a report of a street assault and found him seriously injured with a stab wound close to the heart.

A 33-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently on police bail pending further inquiries.

Mr Lucas today said: “I think we are the first bar in Shropshire to have this new security but I think the others will follow because they will have to with people carrying weapons in Shrewsbury.

“People are carrying weapons in Shrewsbury and I have heard other stories so I do think we have a bit of knife problem. When we speak to people it is common knowledge that people are still carrying knives now and more needs to be done.”

    Well done,

I do hope that the door staff will be calling the police when they catch the scum with blades?

If they want to take security seriously they should get one of those clubscan id scanners
