Knighton police in anti-social behaviour crackdown
Friday 17th September 2010, 9:05AM BST.
Police in a Powys town have stepped up their crackdown on anti-social behaviour by serving notices on youngsters in the area who misbehave.
Constable Bill Cowan, of Knighton Police, said five Police Information Notices under the Harassment Act had already been served on four Knighton youngsters and their parents in an attempt to combat the problem.
He said some anti-social incidents in the town had included people causing a nuisance to others which he wanted to stop before it led to anything more serious.
He added: “These notices outline the unacceptable behaviour of the individuals concerned and are sent in the spirit of crime prevention and to make them aware that if the kind of behaviour described were to continue, then they would be liable to arrest and prosecution.
“The letters are neither a court order nor a criminal record, but are kept by the police for the purposes of any future investigations and are retained in accordance with national guidelines on the management of police information.
“This type of approach, when the offender is known, has proved most successful and is an effective tool in attempting to control anti-social behaviour and does not require anyone to attend court or to give evidence.
“However, it must be borne in mind that a court appearance may result if the behaviour complained of continues.
“Under the Harassment Act, harassment is described as any behaviour, on at least two occasions, which causes alarm or distress to someone else.”
Anyone experiencing problems with ant-social behaviour should call Dyfed-Powys Police on 101 or 0845 3302000.
