Oswestry CCTV plans clear potential hurdle
Thursday 16th September 2010, 9:34AM BST.
Plans to install a CCTV camera to clampdown on anti-social behaviour at Oswestry’s new £170,000 town green have cleared a potential planning obstacle.
Shropshire Council wants to site the camera on the Cambrian Visitors’ Centre in Oswald Road after complaints from residents of yobbish behaviour.
The CCTV application has had to be submitted because the visitors’ centre is a Grade II listed building.
As part of the application process, the council wrote to English Heritage informing it of the plans.
But English Heritage’s historic building inspector John Yates said that, based on the information provided, it was not necessary to notify the body of the application.
The camera move comes after police promised to take a “zero tolerance” approach to troublemakers in the new town green, which opened in July.
A report in support of the bid said the application had been made because “a large investment in the region of £170,000″ had been made.
The report said: “The proposed use of the CCTV camera will be to reduce levels of anti-social behaviour, deter and assist crime, protect area and premises.
“Its use has been designed to have a minimal impact upon the historical fabric of the building.”
The report added: “The area has suffered from nuisance behaviour and although the police and partnership agencies are working together to address the issues it is strongly felt that, short-term, a deployable CCTV will help to build reassurances, displace the causes and secure prosecutions against the perpetrators of criminal activity.”
Shropshire Council hopes to determine the application next month.
