Telford store scheme may create 600 jobs

Plans for a £27 million flagship supermarket complex in Telford look set for approval next week and could create up to 600 jobs.

The scheme for the Red Oak car park at Telford Shopping Centre – which also includes a new town square and new car parking – would replace the existing Asda supermarket.

Asda has decided to move out of its current location in the town centre to the site of Telford & Wrekin Council’s current headquarters.

It provoked a long-running saga with developer Hark Apollo unveiling plans for a multi-million pound foodstore in a last-ditch bid to keep the supermarket giant in the town centre. Asda, however, decided to push ahead with its relocation to the current Civic Office site.

Hark’s scheme is going to the council’s plans board on Wednesday when councillors will be recommended to give delegated authority to the head of planning to grant outline permission.

Telford MP David Wright said the development could create hundreds of new jobs for the borough.

In comments, included as part of the report to councillors, he says: “This is a new flagship store at the heart of the town centre and also includes a range of smaller shops, new facilities, car parking and cycle provision, a pedestrian crossing at Grange Central and a new town square.

“It will provide 600 new jobs and a £27m investment.”

Asda says it does not object to the development providing it takes place after it has relocated and after the expiry of its lease so it does not harm its business.

What a load of tosh. Of coarse this new ASDA will NOT create 600 New jobs.
By the time all the existing staff are moved from there existing store they may employ a few more to top up there requirements and this will certainly not be 600.
I don’t blame ASDA for moving from the town centre as they, and other shops, must be losing customers, like myself, who refuse to pay car parking charges.
All this will no doubt affect other shops in the town centre as most of the ASDA customers won’t bother going to the centre at all, why should they as they can get nearly everything they need in ASDA.
Reading back through this, it sounds like an advert for ASDA, well it’s not, I have no connection with ASDA appart from being one off there customers at Donnington Wood and certainly wouldn’t work for them on the wages they pay.

I hope Hark Apollo realize that ASDA is moving out of it’s present site because people have to pay a parking fee to go grocery shopping.
No way would I pay to go to Telford town centre. Motorists pay enough to use the roads without rediculious parking charges
