Police today urged anyone finding dangerous explosives stolen from a railway station in Shropshire not to touch them.

The 48 detonators were in a safe stolen from the Severn Valley Railway in Bridgnorth yesterday.

There are fears they could cause serious injury if they are detonated.

The explosives are usually used on rail lines to alert train drivers further up the line by making a loud bang when detonated.

But police and SVR officials are concerned people could be injured by shrapnel when the detonators explode.

Now they have issued photographs showing a safe and explosives similar to those stolen from Hanbury Cottage at about 7am.

David Wilcock, Severn Valley Railway spokesman, said the building was used by staff signing in.

He said: “The safe was pulled away from the wall and we believe whoever has taken it thought they were stealing something of value.

“They will probably get quite a shock or be quite disappointed to find all it contains is railway detonators which would not really have any useful purpose or have a lot of monetary value.

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call police investigating the incident on 0300 333 3000.
