Shropshire union leaders’ fears over care cuts

Two Shirehall union leaders today warned that Government cuts in Shropshire could leave vulnerable people at the mercy of paedophiles and criminals as checks and balances are eroded.

Patricia Wilson, branch secretary for Shropshire Unison and her deputy Lou Gladden, also accused Kim Ryley, chief executive of Shropshire Council, of failing to listen to cost-saving measures put forward by members, which they say could prevent some job cuts.

Mr Ryley accused the unions of scaremongering.

Mr Gladden said they had huge fears about Shropshire’s ‘My Life, My Choice’ programme which council bosses say will give more choice to people who need support with their care.

He warned it would see power taken away from social services to private care providers without adequate monitoring to ensure CRB checks and other vetting is carried out. He said there could be a situation where relevant checks aren’t being carried out into job applicants’ pasts.

Mr Ryley today said: “We have said that less essential services will be scaled back or even stopped altogether in the future, but we would never knowingly put the public at risk. To suggest otherwise is to scaremonger and alarm people unnecessarily.

He added that “all good ideas” to help the council find savings are welcome.

How gratifying to see the unions and council working closely on such important topics…I don’t think!

Is it too much to hope that when considering the weak and vulnerable in our society petty politics and name-calling could be put aside?

Am I right in thinking Shropshire Council are like lots of other English authorities and have no choice but to make cuts in the face of drastically reduced Government funding?

The trade unions are well aware of this and proposed cuts in others regions are daily features in the news – so when there is no other option than to work together, trying to minimise the pain everyone has to endure, it surely must be time to stop bickering.

If you must fall out, please do it privately, not by adopting childish name-calling tactics using the forum of the local newspaper.

As so-called responsible people in responsible positions you should be ashamed of this idiotic conduct.

    Grow up!
