Pictures from the Past – week ending September 11

Friday 10th September 2010, 9:01AM BST.

This picture taken in Market Drayton can be dated to June 22, 1911 - Coronation Day. Notice that the shops are closed and boarded up. The postcard message was: "Dear Dora, How do you like this card? It was taken Coronation morning. It is our street. It looked very pretty & can you find Hilda, Gertie & Eliz (these last two names uncertain) just outside our door they have come out of fairly clear, I did not think they would be taken, they were only playing outside that morning. With love from Auntie Adeline (last name very uncertain)" . The three mentioned must be children on the card, either those in the left or the right foreground. This picture comes from the collection of Ray Farlow of Bridgnorth, who has a new book out featuring scores of old views in North Shropshire towns and villages.
