A 53-year-old Shropshire man appeared in court today charged with the murder of his daughter whose body was found at the family home.

Gurmeet Singh Ubhi appeared at Telford Magistrates’ Court this morning and is accused of murdering 24-year-old Amrit Kaur Ubhi.

Ubhi spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth during the court hearing.

Presiding magistrate, Mrs Judith Coleman, remanded Ubhi in custody until September 20 when he will appear at Shrewsbury Crown Court.

Miss Ubhi’s body was discovered at the family home in Berberis Road, Leegomery, Telford, on Tuesday afternoon. She had been strangled.

Tributes today continued to pour in for Miss Ubhi, who worked at Monsoon in Telford Shopping Centre.

Friends said she was also studying a course at Wolverhampton University and had been in a relationship with her boyfriend, who is in the Armed Forces, for around four years.

Denise Sargeant, a friend and colleague, today said: “Amrit was absolutely lovely. She was just a lovely, petite, bubbly character. She was always smiling and always really pleasant.

“She was just fantastic with all of us at work and with the customers.”

Miss Sargeant said staff at Monsoon were told of her death on Wednesday morning and a team of staff from other stores came to run the shop. The store also closed early last night.

Miss Sargeant said Miss Ubhi was hard working and very conscientious and a “perfectly, lovely, gorgeous young lady who had the rest of her life ahead of her”.

She totally adored her boyfriend and often talked about her future dreams of marriage and children, Miss Sargeant added.

Ashar Ehsan, director of marketing and communications at Wolverhampton University, said: “The university community is deeply saddened and we would like to express our sympathies to the family and friends of Miss Ubhi.

“We will be offering support and counselling to Miss Ubhi’s classmates when they return to the university at the beginning of term and organising a book of condolence for Miss Ubhi.”

Miss Ubhi’s mother, Satender Kaur, who also worked in the shopping centre, was too upset to talk today.
