Clash on funds spending in Weston Rhyn

Parents and councillors in a village near Oswestry are clashing over whether to spend thousands of pounds on a new play area or on upgrading a pavilion.

Wayne Gurnett, a parent from Weston Rhyn near Oswestry, has collected more than 50 signatures of support to secure more than £60,000 funding for a play area in the village.

But parish councillors have recommended the money be put into a revamp project for the village’s pavilion. It is hoped the money for either project will come from an agreement with developers working at The Maes Alwyn site.

Mr Gurnett is requesting a play area be built on the village recreation ground. This is owned by members of The Weston Rhyn Playing Field Trust, who are considering the request.

If the money is awarded to the pavilion new changing rooms and a better facility for the village youth club could be created.

Father-of-two Mr Gurnett said: “I want to see the money spent on the children in the village.”

Roger Dyke, clerk of Weston Rhyn Parish Council, said: “The parish council thought rather than buy play equipment they would like to use the money to upgrade the pavilion and provide the youth club with facilities in the pavilion.”

The council will discuss the issue on Monday at 7pm in Weston Rhyn Institute.
